The Overlake Village Station Infiltration Vault has just been completed and was put into service on March 30. Located directly south of SR-520 along 152nd Ave. Northeast, the 1.4 million gallon underground vault is a new regional stormwater facility that provides retention of stormwater and treatment by infiltrating the stormwater into the ground.
The vault supports current and future development in the Overlake neighborhood by delivering stormwater flow control and runoff treatment for a large portion of the Overlake urban center. This is the second of three regional stormwater facilities envisioned in the Overlake Village Stormwater and Park Facilities Implementation Plan, originally approved by City Council in 2010.
“This vault project is the result of ambitious long-range planning and key partnerships between multiple agencies,” stated Mayor John Marchione. “This stormwater infiltration vault and the associated treatment facilities will improve water quality in Redmond as well as Bellevue’s Kelsey Creek, and help reduce urban flooding in our Overlake urban center.”
Forging a unique partnership with Sound Transit, the City of Redmond and Sound Transit agreed in 2014 to construct this underground vault as part of the construction of the Overlake Village Light Rail station, due to open in 2023. Construction of the vault started in June 2017 and was just completed. The vault is located underneath the area that will soon become the plaza street for the Overlake Village Light Rail station. Sound Transit built the vault and the City will own and maintain it.
The King County Council awarded a $100,000 Waterworks grant to support the water quality improvements that will be realized within Sears Creek, Valley Creek, and Kelsey Creek as a result of the new vault. The City also received a $400,000 Flood Reduction grant from the King County Flood Control District. The rest of the project was funded by the City of Redmond Stormwater Utility Fund.
