Overlake School’s health symposium on Saturday to address global health issues

On Saturday, a student club from the Overlake School will present an expert panel of speakers to address global health issues from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the school's Discovery Hall at 20301 N.E. 108th St. in Redmond.

On Saturday, a student club from the Overlake School will present an expert panel of speakers to address global health issues from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the school’s Discovery Hall at 20301 N.E. 108th St. in Redmond.

The Overlake Global Challenge Club has lined up speakers from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, PATH, BioQuest Academy program at Seattle BioMedical, KPLU and NPR Humanosphere project, global health and medicine at the University of Washington, Cascade Designs, Inc. and the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting for its Global Health Symposium.

The panel will discuss current issues in the field of global health and participants will learn about the work being done to seek solutions and how they can help. The panel presentation will open the symposium and be followed by smaller breakout sessions.

The following is a schedule of the day’s events:

Keynote Panel (9-9:50 a.m.)

A keynote panel will introduce attendants to the current issues surrounding global health. Hosted by a moderator, the question-and-answer session will provide insight into the biggest health-related problems facing the world’s most vulnerable citizens and the work being done to ­find solutions.

Breakout sessions (10-10:50 a.m. and 11-11:50 a.m.)

• Journalist Nellie Bristol – Her work includes reporting for the British Medical Journal, The Lancet and the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.
• Seattle BioMedical’s Theresa Britschgi – The BioQuest Academy director will discuss educational outreach directed to introducing and immersing students in research of infectious diseases.
• PATH’s Hugh Chang – The director of Special Initiatives within the Office of the President’s responsibilities include strategic planning and management of program initiatives within PATH.
• Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Chris Duncombe – The senior program officer works on the foundation’s HIV prevention strategy.
• PATH’s Anna Larson – The program assistant works in technology solutions and focuses on the Safe Water Project.
• Cascade Designs’ Laura McLaughlin – The project manager and environmental engineer works in water filtration projects.
• Journalist Tom Paulson – The former Seattle Post-Intelligencer science and medicine reporter is now the curator for KPLU and the NPR Humanosphere Project.
• University of Washington’s Judd Walson – The global health and medicine assistant professor works in the International AIDS Research Training Project.
