On Monday, Redmond-based Microsoft Corp. introduced Surface, the tech giant’s newest tablet.

The unveiling was in Hollywood as company executives showed two Windows tablets and accessories that feature significant advances in industrial design and attention to detail.

Surface is designed to “seamlessly transition between consumption and creation, without compromise,” according to the Microsoft website.

Surface was conceived, designed and engineered entirely by Microsoft employees and builds on the company’s 30-year history manufacturing hardware.

In addition, Surface also has a built-in kickstand that lets users transition from active use to passive consumption such as watching a movie or utilizing rear-facing video cameras. The kickstand is there when needed and disappears when not in use, with no extra weight or thickness.

The new tablet also has a three-millimeter thick Touch Cover that uses “a unique pressure-sensitive technology” that “senses keystrokes as gestures, enabling you to touch type significantly faster than with an on-screen keyboard,” the website states.

The Touch Cover will be available in a selection of colors and clicks into Surface with a built-in magnetic connector. Users can also click in a Type Cover, which adds moving keys for a more traditional typing feel.

Two models of Surface will be available: one that will feature Windows RT and one that will feature Windows 8 Pro. Surface for Windows RT will release with the general availability of Windows 8 this fall, and the Windows 8 Pro model will be available about 90 days later, according to the Microsoft website. Both models will be sold in the Microsoft Store locations in the U.S. and available through select online Microsoft Stores.

Pricing for Surface is not yet available.
