Three local art establishments have partnered with Casion Jewelry in Bothell to promote awareness and end the continuing harassment and violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
Together, the Schack Art Center in Everett, Cascadia Art Museum in Edmonds, and the Bellevue Arts Museum successfully helped the “Cranes for Peace” fundraising campaign raise its second $1,000 of donations to Stop AAPI Hate. Since May 2021, a total of $2,000 from sales of Washi Origami Crane earrings have been donated.
The Stop AAPI Hate Center is a coalition of the Asian Pacific Policy & Planning Council, Chinese for Affirmative Action, and the Asian American Studies Department at San Francisco State University. The organization tracks and reports incidents of hate, violence, harassment, and discrimination as well as provides translation services, advocacy, and more.
“I’m so thankful to my partners for their collaboration on this campaign and our success in raising these funds as well as to all the individuals who support our fundraiser with their purchase of these Washi Origami Crane earrings,” said Casion Jewelry founder and designer Fay Lim. “It means so much to me that people believe in our mission to create awareness and end the continuing violence against AAPI.”
The “Cranes for Peace” fundraising campaign was kicked off in May 2021 in conjunction with Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The first $1,000 was donated in October 2021, six months after the campaign first launched. Plans are to continue fundraising with the upcoming May 2022 Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
The Asian tradition of 1,000 paper cranes represents granting a special wish, happiness, long life, and is a symbol of peace. Using “Washi” or traditional Japanese paper that is processed by hand and made in the traditional manner – these cranes are also treated to prevent UV fading and are water resistant.
