A 50-year-old man was arrested early Saturday morning at the downtown winter homeless shelter after he pulled out a knife and threatened to stab another man.

A temporary nighttime homeless shelter was set up at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse last month and Redmond police got a call at 1:22 a.m. about a confrontation between two men involving a knife in the front of the building at 8703 160th Ave. NE., according to Jim Bove, Redmond Police Department (RPD) spokesman.

“The two had gotten into argument and the person who was threatened tried to avoid any issues, but the person with the knife was more combative,” Bove said.

As the suspect pulled out the folding black knife with a four-inche blade and approached the victim, two witnesses told the suspect to stop, Bove said. At the same time, a shelter volunteer heard the confrontation, came out and asked the suspect to hand over the knife, which the suspect did, according to Bove. The incident ended with no injuries.

Having a weapon is a violation of the shelter’s policy and the suspect was arrested for investigation of Assault 2, Bove said.

Bove said this is one of “several calls to the shelter” since it opened Jan. 15. The shelter is funded to stay open until Feb. 15.

Bove said RPD is “working with other city officials coordinating it to help mitigate any issues in the future.”
