The fourth annual Hotel Cafe “Survivors” reunion will take place from 5-9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Redmond Eagles Hall, 11400 Avondale Rd.
Hotel Cafe was a longtime downtown Redmond business, formerly located at 7844 Leary Way NE. The site is now occupied by Than Brothers Restaurant and US Nails.
Former employees and patrons of the Hotel Cafe are invited to share old memories with friends. The event will feature live music by Southern Comfort. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
“There is a lot of history in that old building,” said Sam Smith, one of the reunion’s organizers. “The Hotel Cafe was open 24/7 and the only place on the Greater Eastside to have something to eat after midnight. And as it turned out, if you needed work, it was the place to go to get a job, see a friend, eat or have a drink — and if you needed a room they had that, too.”
Smith added, “The Hotel Cafe saw people from every walk of life, from the very poor to the very rich, sitting side by side, telling stories and jokes, and some of the best home-cooking in the state. … You could go in at 4 a.m. and cash your pay check, find someone to fix your car, get pulled out of a ditch or get a ride home. … It was a place to go anytime, day or night, for any reason and you really didn’t even need a reason to just stop in.”
