Horace Mann Elementary school teacher Brittany Hall was awarded the statewide Teacher of the Year award from Kidd Valley.
The 14th annual contest receives submissions from K-8 students who nominate their most inspiring teachers to Ivar’s and Kidd Valley, a press release from the organizations said.
The Ivar’s grand prize went to Kirsten Jewett of View Ridge Elementary in Seattle.
The teachers were recently presented with a $500 check to put toward the purchase of class supplies, a commemorative plaque and the title of Teacher of the Year.
Hall and Kyra Brennan, the fifth-grader who nominated her, will also receive a kids meal for every student in their class.
Hall was nominated by Brennan for her commitment to education and eagerness to create inspiration in the classroom, the press release said.
Hall tries to prepare her class for real-world experiences by running a classroom economy that helps students understand the power of a dollar, the release said.
She also sets up mortgages for the desks, paydays and auctions to get students thinking about their future.
Monthly classroom meetings are also held to get feedback from the class and Hall allows her students a punch card for homework, and after 25 punches, the student is rewarded with a prize, the release said.
Fifteen teachers also received second-place honors, which included a $25 gift certificate.
Eighth-grade Redmond Middle School teacher Sam Kuiper received a second-place prize.
