Greater Redmond Transportation Management Association (GRTMA), Redmond Town Center and Microsoft will present trophies and prizes to 52 winning teams, individuals, and companies competing in the 2009 Tour de Redmond from 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26 at Redmond Town Center, Center Street Plaza stage.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend and support these winners.
This fourth annual Tour de Redmond can boast the highest ever participation with more than 800 bicyclists registering from 28 competing Eastside companies. Collectively, 772 riders clocked 225,000 miles in 13,000 trips commuting to work during June and July.
“This is 300 more riders than last year completing the tour,” said Linda Ballew, executive director of GRTMA. “And the miles ridden were 43 percent higher than in 2008. Tour de Redmond brings bicyclists together in a competitive spirit, but it also raises awareness about bicycle commuting as a viable alternative to driving alone in a car. People can still keep their own hours and be independent when they bike to work.”
Ballew added, “Of course it isn’t for everyone, but every year, we see more and more people making this choice. It is the healthy commuting alternative, and that is not lost on those who do it.”
This year’s awards presentation at Redmond Town Center will feature Broadway-style entertainment along with the presentation of more than 50 trophies, as well as cash prizes for the winners.
GRTMA is a non-profit, member-owned company representing 300 companies and more than 52,000 employees in the greater Redmond area. GRTMA seeks to increase commuter mobility and efficient use of the transportation system through services, incentives, education, and the promotion of alternatives to the single occupancy vehicle to its members.
