Two Redmond residents recently became Eagle Scouts with the Boy Scouts of America Troop 613.

Zachary Delano completed his Eagle at age 17 while attending International Community School in Kirkland.

He collected more than 1,600 new and used children’s books for the Room to Read Foundation and Camel Book Drive. The books went to Vietnam and Kenya.The surplus books went to Redmond, Albert Einstein and Norman Rockwell elementary schools, the Union Gospel Mission as well as an inner-city elementary school in Detroit and an elementary school in Big Sandy, W. Va.

Matthew Blanding completed his Eagle at the age of 14 as a home-schooled student.

He held a safety fair, inviting the Redmond police and fire departments to come to the community event for children to talk about fire and personal safety. The children learned about what to do when a stranger approaches them or what to do when they don’t feel comfortable. The fire department discussed what to do in a fire, how to prevent a fire and what to do in other dangerous situations such as a wind storm or earthquake.

Attendees also got the chance to look in the police and fire vehicles. The fire department even turned on one of their hoses for the children. Each child left with an identification card with a photo taken that morning, finger prints and other information their parents filled out to be put in a folder for the future.
