Summer is a great time for vacations, outdoor fun and just relaxing at the beach.
For some kids however, it means that the free or reduced breakfast and lunch that they received at school is no longer available.
The City of Redmond, Hopelink, PCC Natural Markets and Open Kitchen have partnered to help anyone have a free lunch this summer. The city has worked with the community the past four years to see that lunch is available to those who need it. The summer lunch program will start this year on July 6.
The program will run from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, through Aug. 28. It will be located at Sunset Gardens Park at 18304 N.E. 95th St. just off Avondale Way.
There will enrichment games and activities starting at 11:30 a.m. and lunches served starting at noon. It is on a first-come-first-serve basis, but there is usually plenty of food. Everyone is welcome.
“There are schools in Redmond that have 30-45 percent free and reduced lunch students and this is a way to make sure they have a place to go for lunch,” said Ken Wong, teen programs administrator for the City of Redmond.
For those who would like to help or make a donation, they can stop off at the park or email Wong at kwong@redmond.gov for more information.
