The City of Redmond will hold a meeting discussing animal husbandry, including backyard chickens on Aug. 3 from 6-8:15 p.m. at City Hall, 15670 NE 85th St.

At this event, participants will have an opportunity to share their interest, questions and perspective with staff to help inform amendments to Redmond’s policies or code.

Currently, Redmond’s Municipal Code addresses domestic animals and limits the ownership of small animals such as chickens to lots one-half acre or larger.

Ownership of larger animals such as horses and cattle are limited to lots one acre and larger based on the type of animal.

The review of policies and code related to small animal husbandry is one of many components of the periodic updates the city performs to its Comprehensive Plan.

Redmond community members began discussing small animal husbandry with city officials in 2010, asking for backyard chickens to be permitted on lots smaller than one-half acre.

In response, the City Council directed staff to include this topic in the Comprehensive Plan update process.

During the remainder of 2011, the amendment process specific to small animal husbandry includes:

• Community conversation on Aug. 3.

• Planning Commission review and public hearing during September and October.

• City Council review and action during October through December.
