“We received many applications for the award and all of the submissions were wonderful. We have some great teens here in Redmond,” said event manager Rachel Van Winkle.

Julia Doherty, who graduated from Redmond High School on June 12, was selected as the first Derby Do-Gooder and will receive a $1,000 scholarship from Umpqua Bank and appear in the Derby Days Grand Parade.

“We want to support positive youth development through our volunteerism, giving and education programs. Umpqua is very proud to see teens support their community and making a positive impact on other people’s lives. We are honored to recognize Julia Doherty as the 2015 Derby Do-Gooder,” said Alana Ferrie, Umpqua Bank representative.

Doherty has diverse volunteer experience, and it has impacted her by giving her a sense of purpose and has inspired her to do more.

The reinvention of the Derby Queen is just one of the ways that the City of Redmond is intentionally driving community pride and spirit. This year, community members may participate in free community races and contests, business booths were asked to offer interactive games and Redmond restaurants and breweries will be represented. In addition to parades, carnival rides, music and entertainment, VALA will be hosting the Redmond Arts Festival at the Redmond Town Center.

“Every year we would like more local engagement and activation,” said Van Winkle.
