Church’s Day of Service helps improve Redmond businesses, neighborhoods and parks

Last weekend, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Day of Service Northwest featured 753 volunteers and completed 2,229 service hours in Redmond, Sammamish, Duvall and Carnation.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Day of Service Northwest last Saturday featured 753 volunteers and completed 2,229 service hours in Redmond, Sammamish, Duvall and Carnation.

In addition, volunteers donated 500 pounds of food to the Redmond-based Hopelink food bank.

There were several projects in Redmond, including:

• The baby blanket project for Eastside Baby Corner. Seventh-one volunteers made blankets for the Redmond business.

• The Redmond Watershed cleanup. A group of 44 people divided up into smaller groups and removed several non-native species including blackberries, scotch broom, herb robert and tansy ragwort.

• The Redmond Ridge litter pick-up. Thirty-six people, including many younger children, spread out throughout neighborhoods and picked up litter.

• The Redmond YWCA project. Volunteers organized preschool supplies, reinforced planter boxes and cleaned the playground area.

• At Marymoor Park, more than 100 volunteers cleared blackberry bushes and pulled weeds.

• The Farrell McWhirter project. Volunteers removed non-native invasive plants.
