Miya Higashiyama, a junior at The Bear Creek School, won first place in the mezzo-soprano category at the Washington State Solo and Ensemble Contest held Friday and Saturday at Central Washington University in Ellensburg.
Higashiyama competed along with 45 other singers in the mezzo-soprano category and received a Superior (I) rating from all three judges.
She performed two pieces, “Non so più” from Le Nozze di Figaro, by Mozart and “Lullaby” from The Consul, by Gian Carlo Menotti.
Higashiyama will be singing both of the pieces she sang in the contest, which is supported and sponsored by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and Washington Music Educators Association (WIAA/WMEA), at The Bear Creek School’s Upper School Band and Choir Spring Concert. The concert will be Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Cornerstone Theater at 8905 208th Ave. N.E. in Redmond.
