Sustainable Redmond, a grassroots organization which is part of the SCALLOPS (Sustainable Communities All Over Puget Sound) network, will have a booth at the Redmond Derby Days festival and encourages community members to stop by and learn more about the organization.
The booth will be located with IMPACT Redmond Eco-Fair displays, running from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, July 10 near the Redmond Senior Center, 8703 160th Ave. NE.
Sustainable Redmond will also host a free information event from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, July 22 at the Redmond Regional Library, 15990 NE 85th St.
Cecile Andrews, author of “Less Is More,” “Slow is Beautiful” and “The Circle of Simplicity” will talk about “Living Sustainably: Simpler, Slower, Smaller.”
Sustainability can have many meetings. Sustainable Redmond group members, which include people from Audubon Society, Redmond Parks and Trails Commission, Water Tenders, Green Redmond Partnership, Redmond Pedestrian and Bike Advisory Committe and the Marymoor Community Garden, define it as “the practice of using Earth’s natural resources at a rate slower than what can be regenerated, resulting in no net loss of resources.”
Sustainable Redmond is forming interest groups focused on:
• Food, gardening and the natural environment
• Energy efficiency and energy generation
• Alternative transportation
• Sustainability of local businesses, schools and government offices
• Measures of sustainability (water quality, greenhouse gases, waste)
• Lifestyle choices (buying local products, consuming less, etc.)
