SecondStory Repertory features romantic musical ‘She Loves Me’ Feb. 12-March 6

“She Loves Me,” considered by many musical-theatre aficionados to be one of the most charming and romantic musicals ever written, opens on the SecondStory Repertory (SSR) stage on Feb. 12 and runs through March 6 at Redmond Town Center.

Based on the James Stewart movie “The Shop Around The Corner,” this love story is set in a small Eastern European parfumerie in the early 1930’s.

The story actually inspired two more movies: 1949’s “In the Good Old Summertime” which starred Judy Garland and Van Johnson — and the 1998 hit “You’ve Got Mail” starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

Main characters in “She Loves Me” are Georg and Amalia, two bickering clerks in Maraczek’s Parfumerie, who each take secret comfort in a bit of romance with an anonymous pen pal — never suspecting that they are actually writing to one another.

The show features music by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, the award-winning creators of “Fiddler on the Roof,” with a book by Joe Masteroff.

“She Loves Me” is brought to the SecondStory stage by artistic director Susanna Wilson. Performers are Jon Lutyens and Anne Kennedy, joined by Alyssa Keene, Matt Shimkus, as well as SSR favorites Mark Waldstein, Dale Bowers, Sean Mitchell and teen performer Peter Castro. Stephanie McBain, Isaiah Crowson, James Frasca, EmilyRose Shotwell, and Celina Hilbrand round out the cast.

The production is music-directed by Kevin Miller, stage-managed by Crystal Nietzel, costume-designed by Laurie Roberts and features the work of set designer Tellier Killaby-Booth and lighting designer Rob Falk.

“She Loves Me” has a Pay-What-You-Can preview at 8 p.m. Thursday Feb. 11.

The show officially opens Friday, Feb. 12, with performances at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays through March 6.

Tickets are $27 general admission or $21 for students, seniors and educators with ID.
