During its annual Friends Day on Oct. 29, the King County Library System (KCLS) Foundation honored eight are residents for outstanding service to their communities through their volunteer activities for KCLS.
One of the eight honorees was Shay Shortt, manager of Friends of the Redmond Library.
Shortt has been a member of Friends since 2012 and as manager of the continuing Redmond Library book sale, she volunteers several days a week to sort and manage donations. She recruits new volunteers, trains them to price and display books on the sale shelves and divert appropriate materials to online booksellers.
Short also created and manages the Friends’ Facebook page to recruit multilingual volunteers, leading to special biennial sales of books and media in many languages, increasing the proceeds to the Friends group.
Short, along with all volunteers, were invited to a day of celebration to honor their service and thank them for their active support of libraries throughout the county.
Nominees from KCLS Friends, Guild and Association members were considered for membership in the Friends Hall of Fame, whose members are eligible for consideration for Friend of the Year and for the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Award recipients are selected for five key areas of service: Leadership, Accomplishments, Initiative and Creativity, Advocacy and Longevity.
