Leadership students at Redmond High School (RHS) are raising money to fight Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
The grandchildren of campus security guard George Jannusch are afflicted with the genetic disorder. Jannusch is well-known as a trusted friend and role model for students at RHS. Students often tell the Redmond Reporter that he’s their “go-to” person when they’re having a difficult day.
“The events are in honor of George but the money is going to Charley’s Fund (www.charleysfund.com/),” explained student Kailey Trussel, who contacted the Reporter with details.
Currently, RHS classrooms are engaged in “penny wars” for the fund and teachers are pitted in a “Huskies vs. Cougars” battle. The loser will be forced to wear the school colors of his or her rival team.
At 7 p.m. Thursday, May 21, a benefit screening of the documentary “Darius Goes West,” about a teen with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, will take place in the RHS Performing Arts Center, 17272 NE 104th St.
Before the RHS Prom on May 30, students are being asked to “Boycott the Boutonniere” and donate what they would have spent on a boutonniere or corsage to Charley’s Fund. Participants will get a badge or bracelet to show their support.
At 3 p.m. Friday, June 5, the community is invited to a volleyball tournament for the fund. Participants will pay $5 each and spectator fees are $2 — except for children age five and under, who will pay $1 to watch. Teams of eight players are being formed and will likely include Redmond Police and Fire personnel.
A “Last Chance Dance” will follow the volleyball tournament, with donations being accepted.
