Several local students from International Community School in Kirkland, a Choice school in the Lake Washington School District, were award winners at the 2010 National History Day competition held recently at the University of Maryland.

• Nathan Maris of Redmond won second place, Senior Individual Documentary, for “Blood Plasma: Dr. Charles Drew’s Innovation and Its Impact on Trauma Medicine.” Maris’ entry also won in the Legacy Award category.

• Ceridwen Riley of Kirkland and Abby Burlingame of Redmond won third place, Senior Group Performance, for “H4: John Harrison’s Steadfast Determination to Conquer Space with Time.”

• Anastasiya Kirichuk of Woodinville and Jessica Jin of Redmond won seventh place, Senior Web Site, for “The Defibrillator: Revolutionizing the Pulse of Medical Innovations One Beat at a Time.” Kirichuk and Jin’s project also won in the Outstanding Entries for Washington category.

These students from International Community School were advised by Mark Bach.

The mission statement for National History Day reads, “The future of democracy depends on an inspired, thoughtful and informed citizenry. Historical understanding is crucial to that process. National History Day teaches essential historical literacy that motivates students to secure the future of democracy.”
