CORE Theatrics will present its 2013 season opener, the Tony Award-winning musical “Urinetown The Musical.”

Featuring student actors from throughout the Eastside, “Urinetown” is a tale of corruption, greed, love and revolution.

Following a 20-year drought, the characters of the play are forced by the Urine Good Company (UGC) to “pay-to-pee.” Those who cannot afford to pay the price for one of life’s basic needs are sent to the penal colony Urinetown. When a fee hike is enacted, a courageous rebel leads a revolt against the UGC demanding that people have the right to pee for free.

With music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann and lyrics and book by Greg Kotis, “Urinetown” pokes fun at the legal system, capitalism, corporate power, political mismanagement and engages the audience to think of how a malevolent company profits off one of humanity’s basic amenities.

The show opens Jan. 18 and is directed by Heath Saunders, with musical direction by Blake Saunders.

Performances are at 7 p.m. on Jan. 18, 19, 25 and 26 and at 2 p.m. on Jan. 20. All performances will be at the Lake Washington High School Performing Arts Center at 12033 N.E. 80th St. in Kirkland.
