Cellist Audrey Chen, winner of the Eastside Symphony‘s Young Soloists Competition, will be giving a performance on Sunday at the Redmond High School Performing Arts Center, 17272 NE 104th St., at 3 p.m.
Audrey will be playing Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme as part of the Eastside Symphony’s Young Fun concert.
The 14-year-old began playing cello in fourth-grade with Kai Chen. She attends Interlake High School and is the principal cellist of the Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra (BYSO). Audrey placed first in the BYSO Concerto Competition in 2008 and 2011; she also placed first and won the overall excellence award in the solo and concerto competitions of the 2009 Performing Arts Festival of the Eastside.
In addition, Audrey was awarded first place in the WIAA/WMEA Eastshore Regional Solo/Ensemble Contest and will go on to compete at the WIAA/WMEA State Solo/Ensemble Contest. Her quartet was also a finalist in the 2011 Ten Grands Young Artist Awards competition and she was chosen as an alternate in the Junior Division of the 2011 Music Teachers National Association Festival.
Audrey also enjoys playing the piano, fencing, and drawing.
Eastside Symphony’s concert on Sunday will also feature Saint-Saëns’ “Carnival of the Animals” and the third movement of Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1 and the first movement of Stamitz’s Concerto for Viola. The Eastside Symphony performance will conclude with Paul Dukas’ piece, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” all under the direction of music director Alexei Girsh.
