Service with a smile

In describing what her job entails, Lake Washington Education Support Personnel Julie Wulf left out one important thing: greeting everyone who walks through the door with a smile. Julie did this unfailingly in the time my daughter attended Rockwell Elementary.

The public face of a school is generally not the principal nor the teachers, but the school secretary.

Your first impression of the school comes from your interaction with the school secretary. I’ve had the opportunity to walk into a number of schools in this district, and have generally been greeted with a welcoming smile and a helpful attitude. That makes a huge difference in how you feel about entrusting your child to a school and your willingness to spend your tax dollars on a school.

The Lake Washington School District has done an admirable job in investing in beautiful buildings and has some of the most high-tech classrooms I’ve seen, but a failure to invest in people would make it all meaningless.

I understand the limitations in the funding available from the state, but there never has been and never will be enough money to do everything we want.

It’s time to invest more money in people.
