Santa Claus and two great danes, Sagan and Cleo, make their way into the Redmond Pet Pros shop last Saturday afternoon. Residents got the opportunity to bring in their pet — big or small — and get a photo with Santa at the store, located at 15946 Redmond Way. All the proceeds benefited Dogs Deserve Better rescue, which works to get dogs off chains and out of pens. The nonprofit also works to pass anti-tethering legislation for states around the country.

When John Hughes started working in the carpeting and flooring business in 1975, it was just a way to pay for college.
He had no idea his side job would turn into a career.
Hughes, who was attending the University of Washington at the time, worked for University District property owners for a few years before moving to Redmond in 1979 and opening Redmond Carpet & Interiors in October of the same year. Although he opened the business in 1979, Hughes said the showroom was not fully complete until 1980, which is why they are celebrating Redmond Carpet’s 30th anniversary this year.
“(Working in the University District) was a great experience to learn the business,” he said. “It’s kind of funny how you turn around and it’s 30 years later.”

I am a product of the Seattle School District graduating in 1980. I have always had a strong opinion on the need for reform in our national school system.
Why are we basing how the school year and system is set up based upon how we have always done it?
I think I have found a few ways to reduce the state’s budget shortfall.
First, I think we should put the Seattle Waterfront Tunnel on hold. All elected and employed workers should take a 50 percent cut in pay and have to pay their own medical benefits.
Having previously lived in the East Coast for 17 years, I am shocked that a minor snowfall of one inch in the Seattle area could shut down a major metropolitan area.
