Overlake’s Erik Risa and Dylan Reynolds qualified for this Saturday’s 1A state cross-country championships by finishing 20th and 21st, respectively, at last Saturday’s tri-district meet at American Lake Golf Course in Lakewood.
Jesse Leuenberger scored twice and Luke Blankenbeckler and Gabe Rongve added goals in Bear Creek’s 4-0 boys soccer victory over Shoreline Christian on Monday night in a district playoff match in Redmond.

The Junior Boys 8+ from Redmond’s Sammamish Rowing Association placed second at the recent Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. The team included, from left to right, coxswain Lia Roberds, J.D. Laurence-Chasen, Johannes Gees, Andrew Wisegarver, Kyle McKenny, Will Spencer, Dilan Bower, Sam Goertz, Matt Essig and coach Kelly Foster. They came across the finish line of the 5K course with a final time of 15 minutes, 55.093 seconds.
It’s on to state again — for the 12th consecutive season — for the Redmond High girls cross-country team.
Last Saturday, the lady Mustangs placed fourth at the 4A district meet at Lakewood High to qualify for state this Saturday at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. The Redmond boys took seventh at districts and didn’t qualify for state.

• Charter schools would be able to employ non-certified teachers of “unusual competence and in exceptional cases” in place of certificated staff.

I was fortunate to meet with Sheriff Steve Strachan several months ago. I was very impressed with his professionalism, as well as his exceptional grasp of complex issues.
I am one of those citizens who enjoys attending Redmond’s City Council meetings, as well as keeping up with the committees that review the issues before they come to council.
I wanted to share a few words about Cyrus Habib. I know we are getting closer to election day, and I wanted to share a little bit about which 48th District candidate I support.
I am writing to support Roger Goodman, state representative of the 45th Legislative District who was recently given a national award by Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) for Legislator of the Year for his legislation that requires that ignition interlock devices be installed on cars of convicted drunk drivers. MADD noted that interlock devices reduce highway deaths from drunk driving by 20 percent. They called Washington’s law a model for the other 49 states.

I totally agree that longer-time residents on the hills in Redmond are overburdened with high utility costs and levies.

The Overlake School boys cross-country team went undefeated this year in regular-season league meets and took home the first-place trophy at the Emerald City League Championships on Oct. 19 at Lincoln Park in West Seattle.
Next up is the tri-district meet on Saturday at American Lake Golf Course in Lakewood.
Ten players from Redmond High’s girls soccer team — which will travel to Skyline at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for the 4A Kingco championship match — notched all-league honors. Players on each Kingco team made the selections.
The Mustang players are:

Second team — Marianna Castro, goalkeeper; Kristin Hayman, midfield; Andrea Larson, forward

On Saturday, students from the Eastside Native American Education Program (ENAEP) will host their sixth annual Veteran’s Honoring Pow Wow at Juanita High School at 10601 N.E. 132nd St. in Kirkland.
Young Women Empowered (Y-WE) has joined the campus of Together Center, a one-stop human services campus in downtown Redmond that serves East King County.
On Saturday — National Make A Difference Day — Assistance League of the Eastside will present almost 1,000 children’s books for families living in transitional housing run by Redmond-based Friends of Youth (FOY) on the Eastside.
Unfortunately, an article in the Oct. 19 Redmond Reporter serves to downplay the seriousness of the overcrowding at Rosa Parks Elementary School. (“Pierce plans to implement temporary boundary for Rosa Parks.”) True enough, to point this out won’t make any difference in how the Lake Washington School District (LWSD) will have to try to cope with the situation. But let’s keep in mind that parents and students are those most affected. They’re the ones who really have to cope! Parents deserve an accurate and straightforward presentation of the facts. Let them face the realities, too.
• The hope in approving Referendum 74 is that it will improve the lives of same-sex couples and their adopted children. However, approving R74 will not help.
