Nytec, Inc., a Redmond-based engineering firm, held its first pet food drive benefiting the Seattle Animal Shelter, with its employees donating 531 cans of dog and cat food, 19 bags of food equaling 130 pounds, pet shelters and other assorted supplies. The estimated value of all donations totals almost $1,500.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2013, all Washington businesses will be required by law to recycle their fluorescent light bulbs and tubes.
The law, RCW 70.275.080, was passed in 2010 with Section 8 becoming effective on New Year’s Day. It requires all persons, residents, government, commercial, industrial and retail facilities and office buildings to recycle mercury-containing light bulbs and tubes at the end of their life.
Hopelink is teaming up with Groupon Grassroots — the philanthropic arm of Groupon — to help provide fresh fruits and vegetables to local families during the winter months. This month, The Bear Creek School’s “Hidden Treasures Sale” raised $3,616 to support Sri Lanken children orphaned in the Christmas tsunami of 2004. Now in its seventh year, the sale is held each December at The Bear Creek School’s Valley Campus near Perrigo Park. All proceeds are donated to the Indra Silva Memorial Nutrition Program, which provides orphans with four meals each week, as well as clothing, shoes and tutoring.
