The Redmond Historical Society will meet on Saturday, Jan. 8, from 10:30 to noon at The Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center, 16600 NE 80th St.
Museum of History and Industry historian Lorraine McConaghy will discuss her newest research project concerning a teenage runaway slave in 1860. The boy was approached on the streets of Olympia, by free blacks from Victoria, and encouraged to escape from his master and stow away on the international mail steamer. As soon as he reached Victoria, Charles Mitchell was a free boy.
As the 150th anniversary of the Civil War nears, it is timely to learn how the war’s issues played out here in the Washington Territory.
