In order to accommodate the demand for its after-school math program, Abacus West in Redmond is expanding to include another location for the upcoming spring semester.

The newest location will be at thinkspace, 8201 164th Ave. N.E., Suite 200 in the downtown.

Since its launch in January 2010, Abacus West has continued to grow with an increasing number of students enrolled in the program and a steadily growing team of abacus math teachers. Abacus West students come from many Eastside communities, as well as from Seattle, Renton, Bothell and Edmonds.

“It has been rewarding to see so many students benefiting from the Abacus West program,” said founder and head teacher Vinaya Kulkarni. “Our student base has grown significantly in the past several months and we continue to help students who need math enrichment as well as students who need help building basic math fundamentals. I am excited about the thinkspace location since this will allow us to offer even more class options for families in the local communities.”

Abacus West incorporates a number of interactive and dynamic techniques, including the use of an abacus to teach math to children aged 5 to 12. Children are taught how to manipulate the beads of an abacus and also how to visualize a “mental abacus,” which enables children to perform math calculations in their heads.

Enrollment is now open for spring classes, which begins Monday. For more information, visit www.abacuswest.com.
