“We have been playing kind of sluggish, and we are still trying to come together a little bit, but tonight the team put some things together,” said head coach Justin Prohn. “Our defense picked up and we finally knocked down some shots.”

Dean Poplawski led all scorers with 22 points, followed by Will Spencer with 12.

With the win, the Owls will go on to play in the championship match against Charles Wright Academy, which beat Oakville in the other opening-round game, with tipoff coming at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Overlake School.

 

Mustangs nip Ballard on the road

A big second quarter was the difference in a defense-led 4A Kingco basketball game on Tuesday night in Ballard, as Redmond edged out the Beavers 54-50.

Trailing by three after the first period, Redmond scored 20 in the second while holding Ballard to just six, and was able to hold on for the win.

Redmond’s Jason Harrington led all scorers with 19, followed by Peter Hendron’s season-high 14 and Leslie Ellis’ 13.

With the win, the Mustangs improved to 2-2 in league play and 4-2 overall.

The team will next be taking a holiday trip to the bay area of California for the Bambauer Classic, with their first game coming up on Tuesday, Dec. 27.

 

Bear Creek boys rout Chief Leschi

The Grizzlies outmatched visiting Chief Leschi on Tuesday night in a Sea-Tac 2B league game 72-24.

For Bear Creek, sophomore guard Jesse Leuenberger had his fifth double-digit game of the season, scoring a game-high 19, followed by Lucas Fernandez’s 16 and Collin Feight’s 14.

The Grizzlies remained perfect this season at 2-0 in league play and 6-0 overall.

 

Mustang girls drop third straight

Despite a monster fourth quarter, the Redmond High girls’ basketball team fell just short of an amazing comeback against Ballard on the Beavers’ home court on Tuesday afternoon, 46-41.

The Mustangs could hardly find the hoop in the first three quarters, scoring just 20 points and facing a 17-point deficit, but they came together for 21 in the final period to fall just short.

Kelsey Dunn and Ali Jorgensen led the team with 13 points apiece, which led all scorers.

The Mustangs are now 1-3 in league play and 2-5 overall.
