Overlake’s boys lacrosse team — which features some Bear Creek players — lost to top-ranked and undefeated Garfield, 15-7, in Wednesday night’s state quarterfinal game at Genesee Park in Seattle.

Colton Umberger scored three goals and Barrett Jenness had two on Wednesday for the Owls (9-5-0), who defeated Peninsula-Gig Harbor, 18-8, last Friday in the second round of the state playoffs.

Against Peninsula-Gig Harbor, Overlake fell behind, 2-1, at the end of the first quarter, but scored nine in the second to take a lead it would never relinquish, according to coach Greg Butler. Jenness led the Owls with five goals, while Curtis Yokoyama and Umberger had three each.

Overlake’s strong offense was led by the Owls’ three captains and midfielders, Curtis Yokoyama, Erik Risa and Kinori Rosnow. Jenness and Umberger anchored the team’s attack with Jack Roberts adding to its offensive power, Butler said.

Overlake, which played in Division 2 in the newly created Metro Conference this season, boasted a solid defense comprised of freshmen and sophomores, including goalkeeper Parker Hayne.

“The team chemistry (was) very good and we had a very successful season,” Butler said.  Overlake lost its first two games to Seattle Prep and Garfield, but Butler said those defeats brought the team together and motivated the boys to improve.

Come-from-behind victories over Bishop Blanchet, 13-12 (overtime), and a rematch against Seattle Prep, 14-12, turned the Owls’ season around, the coach added.
