Prep Report – Mustangs claim fourth straight victory

The Redmond boys’ basketball team went on the road last Friday and continued their winning ways, beating the Eastlake Wolves, 64-55 for its fourth straight 4A Kingco victory.

Redmond guard Chris Harrington, coming off a 24-point performance in a win against Bothell last week, scored 20 points against the Wolves and teammate Justin Alexander added 16. Michael Russo led the Wolves with 20 points.

Trailing by two at halftime, Redmond used a second-half scoring barrage to come back for the win.

An incredible 52 points were scored in the fourth quarter alone, but the Mustangs’ 25 was enough to hold off the surging Wolves.

The win improved Redmond’s league record to 4-2 and 6-4 overall.

BEAR CREEK SUFFERS FIRST LOSS

In a hard-fought battle, the Bear Creek boys’ basketball team lost their first game of the season, falling to Quilcene, 40-36, on the road in a Sea-Tac 2B contest.

The Grizzlies led 29-26 going into the fourth quarter, but Quilcene stepped up its defense and outscored Bear Creek, 14-7, in the fourth to seal the win.

Jamie Meyer led all scorers with 13, and Kyle Blankenbeckler added eight for Bear Creek.

With the loss, Bear Creek dropped to second place in the league behind Seattle Lutheran (6-1). The Grizzlies are now 5-1 in league play and 12-1 overall.

OVERLAKE BOYS BOUNCE BACK

The Overlake boys’ basketball team bounced back after a tough 49-45 loss to rival Cedar Park Christian on Friday, beating Auburn Adventist at home in a nonleague game 73-66.

With Overlake Leading 41-27 at the half, Auburn closed the gap to within five after the third quarter, but the Owls held on for the win.

Playing without Trent Halvorson, who suffered a broken tailbone during last week’s loss to Bellevue Christian, Danny Poplawski scored a team-high 23, while Chandler Hire and Otis Osman each put in 12 for the Owls.

The win improved Overlake’s overall record to 7-4, while its record in 1A Emerald City play stands at 3-2.

WOLVES BEAT LADY STANGS

The visiting Lady Stangs faltered in the second half as Eastlake beat Redmond, 55-44, in a 4A Kingco contest last Friday.

Redmond was leading by one at the half before Eastlake outscored the Mustangs, 35-23, in the second half. Wolves’ guard Alyssa Charlston, who scored a game-high 20, led the offensive charge.

Courtney Martin led Redmond with 14, with point guard Alicia Valentine adding 13.

The loss dropped the Mustangs to below .500 in league play at 3-4 and 6-5 overall.

BEAR CREEK GIRLS OUTMATCHED

The Bear Creek girls sputtered on offense last Thursday, losing to Tacoma Baptist, 47-32, in a nonleague game in Tacoma.

Despite only scoring two points in the first quarter, the Grizzlies trailed by just five heading into the locker room at halftime, but managed just 15 the rest of the game against Tacoma’s bigger and more experienced squad.

Alexis Miller led the Grizzlies with 12, and Megan Cheever added nine.

The Grizzlies’ overall record dropped to 4-7, while the team still holds a 1-1 record in Sea-Tac 2B league play this year.

OWLS COME UP BIG

Overlake juniors Jessica Elliott and Maya Marder each scored 16 as the Owls beat Auburn Adventist, 47-34, in a nonleague girls’ basketball game.

The Owls’ tough defense allowed Auburn just 13 in the first half as Overlake coasted to the win.

The Owls went over .500 with the win at 5-4 overall. Their league record remains at 3-3.

STANG GYMNASTS PLACE THIRD

The young Mustangs turned in one of their strongest performances of the year last Thursday against Liberty, Mercer Island and Lake Washington at Mercer Island High School, finishing third with 136.55 points, only 12 behind Liberty, which won the meet.

For Redmond, Ally Garcia scored an 8.3 on the beam to take third. Marjorie Drieru’s effort on the floor earned her 8.55 points and second place, and Garcia’s 8.60 in the vault was good for a second-place tie.
