Would a chance to vote for potential productions increase your interest in a local theater company?

Susanna Wilson, artistic/education director of SecondStory Repertory (SSR) at Redmond Town Center, is hoping that’s the case. A new reading series, to give community members a taste of shows which might be produced, will kick off this fall with a reading of the 1960s sex farce “Boeing! Boeing!”

The pay-what-you-can reading event takes place from 8-11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25 at SSR, located upstairs at the Town Center, next to Borders.

In “Boeing! Boeing!,” a man named Robert arrives in Paris to visit his friend Bernard. He learns that Bernard is engaged to three “stewardesses,” as they called flight attendants back in the day.

Playboy Bernard manages to keep “one (fiancee) in the air, one on the ground and one pending.” That is, until a company called Boeing — ever heard of ’em? — builds a new, faster, airplane that brings all of the gals to town — and his apartment — at the same time. Mayhem ensues as he attempts to keep the ladies from running into one another.

The part of Bernard will be read by Eric Reidmann, previously seen in SSR’s productions of “The Last Night of Ballyhoo” and “I Hate Hamlet.”

Reading the part of Robert, will be James Lapan, who teaches stage combat at SSR.

The parts of the three hotties, Janet, Jacqueline and Judith, will be read by Rebecca Olson (“Last of the Red Hot Lovers”), Shanna Allman (“Last Night of Ballyhoo”) and Kate Kraay (“I Hate Hamlet”).

Another character, a cranky housekeeper named Bertha, will be read by Pat Haines-Ainsworth, who teaches at SSR and appeared in “Urinetown.”

Why do a reading instead of just staging the play?

Wilson explained, “The reading is to get feedback. Our mission is audience development. New people should have a say.”

So the reading series is somewhat like test marketing. If participants express interest, SSR might follow up with a full production of “Boeing! Boeing!”

“We’re not expecting a big crowd,” Wilson admitted, “but this is to let people put their two cents in, discuss themes that make this a good fit for the community or not. We’ll do at least one more play reading and then have a ‘Showcase Showdown’ and let audiences look at one against another, talk about the challenges or benefits of doing the show in our small space.”
