The Redmond boys’ swimming and diving team put together a strong fourth-place performance at Saturday’s Sea-King District championships at Juanita High School in Kirkland, finishing with 157 points.

Redmond had two individual winners in Dylan Portelance, who won the 200 free event with a state-qualifying time of 1 minute, 46.80 seconds, and diving savant Max Klassen, who ran away with the title scoring 451.65 points. Klassen, the favorite to win the diving crown at this weekend’s state competition, finished nearly 100 points ahead of Inglemoor’s Spencer Moore, who finished second at the district meet.

Klassen also had a runner-up finish in the 100 free with a time of 49.32.

Redmond’s Guillermo Romano placed second in the 100 fly at 56.40 and the 200 free relay team of Portelance, Romano, Anton Asobov and Klassen placed second with a time of 1:32.67, exactly one second behind a very talented Inglemoor squad. The same Mustang lineup also swam the 400 free relay in 3:23.08, good for fourth place and another state-qualifying mark.

Garfield won the meet with 268.5 points, followed closely by Inglemoor with 260. The Class 4A state swimming and diving meet this Friday and Saturday at King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way, with the championship heats beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Six seniors on the Redmond team —Romano, Osobov, Portelance, Andrew Roehrig, Will McCahill and Tyler West — were also named Scholar Athletes for maintaining a 3.75 GPA during the swim season.

Earlier this month, the Mustangs were honored with the Team Sportsmanship award at the Kingco Championships, with Portelance and Klassen earning All-Crest Division first-team honors as well.
