Redmond High School (RHS) junior Jasmine Keith’s Wumpus rendition was selected for this year’s “Hunt the Wumpus” event.

Each year, students from RHS, Inglemoor, Bellevue, Newport and Interlake high schools compete in this Microsoft-sponsored event. The schools provide teams of programmers, each of which works with a Microsoft volunteer to implement a game specification using Microsoft professional tools and project procedures.

“Hunt the Wumpus” is vaguely defined. In the labyrinth of a cave lives the dreaded Wumpus. The player is an explorer with the task of braving dangers to find and slay this Wumpus. This vagueness is intentional, providing the teams opportunity to embellish both the game and the user interface. The resulting programs share only a family resemblance.

Other than it is reputed to be unattractive no one knows what a Wumpus looks like. And each year student artists submit their impressions. Microsoft chooses one for that year’s t-shirts, water bottles, and other items.

Keith, in addition to having her Wumpus selected, is also taking classes at DigiPen.

Wumpus competition day is June 2 on the Microsoft campus. Team entries are judged by Microsoft professionals and prizes awarded. Additionally, there are prize drawings, guest speakers and much more.
