Redmond’s first baby of 2009

Bon Pineda and his wife, Amppy, of Redmond, welcome their son, Aiden, as the first baby born in 2009 at Overlake Hospital Medical Center in Bellevue.

Aiden was born at 6:44 a.m. Jan. 1 and weighs 9 pounds and is 20 1/4-inches tall.

Bon, an auditor with the state Department of Revenue, said he was aware of the financial advantages of a child born at the end of 2008, but is all smiles over Aiden’s 2009 delivery. Grandparents are Bob and Thess Thurgood of Bothell.

World Dance Extravaganza coming up

The Overlake School presents a World Dance Extravaganza, a community dance experience, at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 17, in the Fulton Performing Arts Center, 20301 NE 108th St., Redmond. Tickets are $5 and seating is limited.

Top Food Store collecting coats

Through Jan. 31, Top Food & Drug Stores, including the new Top Food at 7320 170th Ave. NE in Redmond, are collecting donations for the 13th annual Warm Coats for Kids campaign.

Requested items include new or gently worn coats, hats, scarves and mittens. Donations will be distributed to women’s and children’s centers in Puget Sound by Northwest Center (http://nwcenter.org).

Customers of Top Food & Drug have donated between 5,000 and 6,000 coats annually to the drive in recent years. Other participating Top stores include those in Bellevue, at 15751 NE 15th St., and in Woodinville, at 17641 Garden Way NE.

Donations also may be dropped off at participating locations of Applebee’s, Sterling Savings Bank and Emerald Queen Casino.

Vermeulen to serve on advisory board

Scott Vermeulen, a Redmond exclusive agent, has been chosen to join a select group of 71 agency owners and personal financial representatives from around the country who serve on Allstate Insurance Company’s National Advisory Board.

Vermeulen will represent the Northwest Region as a member of the EA Business Relationship committee.

The National Advisory Board was established in 2003 as a vehicle to give agency owners and personal financial representatives a voice on national issues.

Members meet twice a year with Allstate’s senior leadership to focus on business issues of importance to Allstate and the 14,000 agency owners and personal financial representatives countrywide who sell the company’s insurance and financial products.

Vermeulen has been associated with Allstate for more than 21 years. His office is located at 16987 Redmond Way in Redmond and offers a full line of personal insurance and financial products.

Historical Society to meet Jan. 10

The Redmond Historical Society will meet from 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, Jan. 10 at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center, 16600 NE 80th St.

Lorraine McConaghy, historian with Seattle’s Museum of History and Industry, will speak about “The Civil War in Washington Territory.” Some may not know that the Civil War involved citizens on the Pacific coast, since Washington settlers did not leave the war behind them but brought the war with them.

This presentation is free and all in the community are welcome.
