Making the most of the six-month layoff between the end of the 1A Emerald City League’s schedule and the 1A state tournament, the Owls boys shut out Coupeville 4-0 on Tuesday night at Sammamish High School.

Sophomore Jesse Klug ignited a team-wide effort with an assist of Devon Schmidt at the 11-minute mark, and scored one of his own, unassisted, at 25:00.

Schmidt set up Andrew Cunningham for the team’s third goal in the first half at 38:00 and senior Sky-Tweedie Yates put the icing on the cake off of Cunningham’s assist at 51:00.

Goalkeepers Chap Grubb and John Stolarczuk combined for the shutout.

The Owls go on to play in the state quarterfinals against Charles Wright this Saturday at Sammamish High School, time is TBD.

OVERLAKE LACROSSE OUSTED BY CURTIS

The Owls lost a heartbreaker of a game on Wednesday night in the opening round of the Division I playoffs at Curtis High School, falling 7-6.

The Vikings led 3-0 at the half, but Overlake fought back and closed the gap to 5-3 with one quarter remaining.

Down by three goals, the Owls scored twice in the last 37 seconds of the game to pull within one but were unable to score the equalizer.

For the Owls, Barrett Jenness scored three goals, followed by Sky Tweedie-Yates with two and Joe Dolack with one. Chap Grubb had seven saves in goal as the Owls finished their year with a record of 9-6-0.

OWL GOLFERS HEADED TO STATE

Overlake boys’ golfers Reid Fredrickson, a junior, fired a 78 and freshman Danny Lee shot 80 at Eagle Pride Golf Course in Fort Lewis on Tuesday to advance to the 1A state tournament, which will be held May 25-26 at Columbia Point Golf Course in Richland. David Anderson narrowly missed the cut and will go as the first alternate.

Overlake girls’ golfers Jessica Elliott and Aubrey Devine battled a strong field of girls’ teams to make it as well, with Meggie Howell serving as the third alternate.
