On Sept. 22, the King County Department of Transportation (KCDOT) was honored by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission for its work in improving the safety of two county roadways — Northeast Novelty Hill Road near Redmond and Southeast Lake Holm Road near Auburn.
KCDOT won first prize in the category of preventing Run-Off-Road Crashes. The project used vehicle-activated flashers, driver feedback signs and in-road lights on these county roads that had a history of run-off-road collisions.
The Traffic Safety Awards Program mirrored Washington’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan: Target Zero, which was approved by Gov. Chris Gregoire in 2007 and updated in August 2010. Target Zero is Washington’s plan to eliminate traffic deaths in the state by the year 2030.
The award categories matched the objectives in Priority One and Priority Two levels of Target Zero, to address the problems of Impaired Driving, Run-Off-Road Collisions, Speeding-Involved Collisions, Unrestrained Occupants, Intersection Collisions and Traffic Data Systems.
More than 50 nominations were judged by a multi-disciplinary team of traffic safety professionals from the state and national levels.
