Bear Creek students shine at chess tourney

The Bear Creek School hosted its 4th Annual Chess Tournament April 5 with 246 players from more than 40 schools from the Pacific Northwest.

The Bear Creek School hosted its 4th Annual Chess Tournament April 5 with 246 players from more than 40 schools from the Pacific Northwest.

Participating for Bear Creek in the younger sections were Zachary Muzio, who placed 10th out of 23 Kindergarteners; Zecky Cheung, who placed fourth overall in the 1st-3rd U800 section; Justin Buckley, who placed third in 2nd grade; and Adesuwa Agbonile, Philip Ferreira, Matthew Mistele, Gabriel Muzio, Connor Pittman, Daniel Rasmussen, and Richard Zhang, who all had a part in contributing to a seventh-place team trophy for the 1st-3rd grade section.

Luke Poling and Ryan Caraway each had three points and combined with Ethan Kusters to earn a seventh-place team trophy for the 4th-6th grade section.

Also notable was the 7th-12th grade section with Nick VanBaak doing well in his first tournament, Blake Dixon and Dillon Baker tying for second place with three points each and Dakota Dixon finishing in first place with 3½ points.

The team was coached by Slava Mikhailuk.
