Redmond High School (RHS) seniors Josh Bircher and Devin McMahon have been honored by the RHS Athletic Department as Athletes of the Year during a recent graduation assembly.
Bircher played basketball and baseball for the Mustangs, averaging a team-leading 10.1 points per game last winter as a point guard.
In the spring, Bircher, a defensive wizard at second base, did not commit an error in the first 25 games of the season while batting .296 for the Mustangs in the leadoff spot. Bircher also led the team in stolen bases with 19 (third-best all time), including five in one game against Garfield on April 26.
McMahon, a distance running specialist, returned to cross-country and track this year after complications due to low body weight sidelined her during her junior year.
Just last month, she placed seventh in the state in the 3,200 meters with a time of 11 minutes, 3.36 seconds, just a shade behind her season-best time of 11:02.43.
Last fall, McMahon finished first in all eight of her 5,000 meter races during the regular season, and ended up placing third in the event at state, running 18:23.
