Last weekend officers from the Redmond Police Department conducted special emphasis patrols to tackle exhaust systems that are louder than stock specifications.

On September 9, officers conducted 15 stops and cited seven vehicles for modified mufflers, and on September 10 officers issued 12 additional warnings, according to RPD.

“In response to multiple complaints from community members about the ongoing issue of loud exhaust systems on our streets and in our neighborhoods, we are dedicating resources to educate and cite drivers who violate the law,” said Chief Darrell Lowe.

Exhaust systems that are modified or removed to amplify the noise emitted by the engine are illegal in Washington. The fine for first offenders is $149; the fine for second offense is $190; and the fine for the third offense is $231. Repeat offenders who are ticketed for six equipment violations in a 12 month period will have their license suspended for 60 days.
