On July 28, Leyla Rouhfar will be offering her dental services for free to children 14 years old and younger.
From noon to 5 p.m., Rouhfar Dental at 15466 Bel-Red Rd. in Redmond will be performing checkups, cleanings and fluoride treatments for children who may not get to the dentist on a regular basis.
“Anybody who cannot afford to bring their children to the dentist (can come),” the Redmond resident said.
Rouhfar said since the economic downturn, she has seen her business slow down significantly. She credits much of this to people losing their jobs and or benefits and no longer being able to afford dental services. Rouhfar, who opened her practice about four years ago, has been wanting to offer her free dental day for children for about a year. She said she wants to reach children and families who don’t have access to dental care. She has done some community outreach with her son’s school, but said most of those children are the ones who already have access.
In addition to the treatments, Rouhfar and her staff will also provide oral hygiene instructions. Kids will learn how to take care of their teeth at home and receive toothbrushes, floss and other materials they may need for their at-home dental routine.
Rouhfar will see children by appointment only so she and her staff can schedule as many patients as possible. She has also devised a rotation system where the children will go from station to station for each step in their appointment.
There will be minimal paperwork to fill out regarding allergies and other basic concerns.
“So I can do what I need to do that day,” Rouhfar explained.
Rouhfar said proper oral hygiene is important because it will help prevent dental disease, tooth decay and other health issues. She said this was why it’s important to her to educate kids.
“If I can provide that information early on in life…they’re going to have less problems,” she said. “Your teeth are attached to the rest of your body, so (proper oral hygiene) affects everything.”
