Lili Hargreaves’ running career has been rather short, but she’s already made a major impact on the scene.
The Redmond High sophomore took up the sport two years ago, and on May 25 the Mustang notched fourth in the 3200 at the 4A state track and field meet at Mount Tahoma High in Tacoma. She was ranked 14th out of 17 runners at the start of the race and ended the grueling eight-lap journey with a mark of 10:53.79 — a personal record by 17 seconds.
While her body was beat, she was elated with her accomplishment.
“I was just going for sub-11 and I got 10:53,” Hargreaves said. “Last race of the season, so I was pretty happy. I like pushing myself and achieving my goals.”
For Denis Villeneuve, it was his last race as a coach and said it was fun and rewarding to witness Hargreaves stick to her race plan and reap success.
Hargreaves discussed the formula: “I think I just really used the strategy of moving up and I really paced myself well. Before the state race, I went too slow a little bit on the middle laps (at districts), and I kind of pushed myself more and it helped me get a better time (at state).”
Hargreaves, who placed 13th at the state cross country race in the fall, nabbed eighth in the 1600 with a PR of 5:05.42 on May 23 at state. She placed 12th in the 3200 at state last season.
The Reporter asked Hargreaves a series of questions for a behind-the-scenes glimpse into her life:
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Last year I remember before state cross country, Vill, he told us even if you’re hurting, you’ll be fine, you’ll be OK.
What do you appreciate the most in life?
My family, ‘cause they’re always supporting me.
If you could go to dinner with one person, who would that be?
Maybe Bill Gates, that would be cool, it’s just so interesting (his success story).”
What’s a special skill you’d like to learn?
Maybe juggling, because I can ride a unicycle, so maybe if I did both that would be pretty cool.
How did you get into unicycling?
My dad used to unicycle when he was a teenager, and one time he bought a unicycle from Craigslist. And just all summer, we unicycled around the neighborhood.
What super power would you like to have?
Mind reading. Little scary, little interesting sometimes, too.
What’s your favorite restaurant in the area?
We always go to Molly Moon’s, it’s not a restaurant (laughs). I really like that.
What’s your biggest pet peeve?
I hate when people breathe really loud.
What’s your dream vacation spot?
Bora Bora. There’s the huts on the water, that’s pretty cool.
What’s your favorite movie of all time?
Recently I just watched “Five Feet Apart” in the movie theater. It’s really good, it’s really sad, but I really liked it.
What’s your favorite kind of music?
Probably just pop.
