Redmond’s annual Bike Bash set for Friday

The event is in its eighth year.

Bike Bash is coming to Redmond once again.

The annual event will be from 4-7 p.m. on Friday at the Redmond Central Connector.

In its eighth year, Bike Bash introduces people to bicycling and it also celebrates those who enjoy cycling in Redmond during May’s Bike Everywhere Month. The bash is a collaboration between the city of Redmond’s Parks and Recreation department and Go Redmond.

“We have a lot of people who bike here in Redmond and who use the trail system,” Go Redmond program administrator Carline Chapman said. “[We also] have people who bike for fun and [we] want to celebrate them on this national bike everywhere month.”

Bike Bash will include bike skills clinics presented by local bike shops. Topics include basic bike maintenance presented by Edge and Spoke; e-bike basics presented by Pedego Electric Bikes; how to fix a flat tire presented by Element Cycles and more. Attendees will also have the opportunity to buy $10 helmets from the Redmond Police Department. Coming back is the Kid’s Bike Rodeo and Kids to Parks Day. The rodeo and activities will take place across the street at the Downtown Park.

Between May and September, Go Redmond will be offering three levels of small group bicycle education classes for adults. During bike month, Redmond residents participated in Bike to Work Day. Employers including Microsoft, Nintendo and more motivated their employees to participate in the bike challenge. In addition, Lake Washington School District seven schools in Redmond participated in the National Bike to School Day through the Redmond SchoolPool Program.

According to a city release, Redmond is providing encouragement and education around biking in works to reduce neighborhood traffic congestion and local air pollution and increase the physical health of the city. Go Redmond is a partnership among the city, Greater Redmond Transportation Management Association (TMA) and King County Metro.

Go Redmond personalizes commute help for people who live or work in Redmond; schedules and sets up transportation outreach events at specific sites in Redmond; provides transportation resources such as transit and bike maps; and helps meet people’s worksite commute trip reduction and TMP goals.
