The Bear Creek School boys’ basketball team exploded late on Saturday afternoon for a 45-31 win over University Prep in a non-league contest on the Pumas’ home court.

The defensive game was knotted at 16-16 at the half and was anybody’s game until the final period, when the Grizzlies outscored the Pumas 18-5 to seal the win.

Lucas Peterson led Bear Creek with 14 points, followed by Ryan Strandin with 11 and Luke Blankenbeckler with 10.

With the win, the Grizzlies improved to 2-0 on the season.

OWLS FALL TO CEDAR PARK

The Overlake School boys’ basketball squad fell to Emerald City League rival Cedar Park Christian, 67-46, on Friday night at home.

The Owls trailed by just one at the half until a 22-point fourth quarter by the Eagles sealed the home team’s fate.

For Overlake, Cameron Lui poured in 19, followed by Dean Poplawski with 15. Eagles’ senior guard Victor Sviridyuk scored a game-high 24.

The loss dropped the Owls to 0-2 in league play and 1-4 overall.

MUSTANGS SUFFER FIRST LOSS IN OT

The Redmond High boys’ basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Lake Washington, a 3A Kingco school, 47-42, in overtime in the Les Schwab Preview Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Highline Community College.

In the overtime period, the Kangaroos outscored the Mustangs, 9-4, to pull out the narrow non-league win.

A trio of Mustangs led Redmond’s balanced attack, as Jason Harrington and Andrew Squiers both pitched in with 11 points, followed by Peter Hendron with 10.

Lake Washington’s Darien Nelson-Henry led all scorers with 22.

The non-league loss dropped the Mustangs to 3-1 overall, while the team remained perfect at 3-0 in 4A Kingco play.

LADY STANGS FALL TO EASTLAKE

The Redmond High girls’ basketball team ran out of firepower against a tough Eastlake squad on Friday night, losing 64-42, in a 4A Kingco contest.

The Wolves led for the entire game, and put the game out of reach with a 22-point third quarter as they expanded their lead to 47-28 entering the final quarter.

For the Mustangs, sophomore forward Lauren Bogard led the team with 14, followed by Stacey Kimball who scored 11.

The loss dropped Redmond to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in 4A Kingco action.

GRIZZLIES STAY PERFECT

The Bear Creek School girls’ basketball team got off to a roaring start on the road on Saturday afternoon against University Prep in a 41-28 non-league win.

The Grizzlies used the explosive offense of 6-foot-2 forward Catherine Fernandez and excellent defense to open a commanding 31-9 lead at halftime en route to an easy victory.

Fernandez scored 19 points, followed by Kristina Englestone with 10.

The win improved the Grizzlies to 3-0 overall, with the team’s first league contest coming up this Friday against Crosspoint Academy at 6 p.m.
