Police ask public for footage from Redmond Lights attack on officers

The attack occurred just before 5 p.m. on Dec. 1 in the 7800 block of Leary Way.

The Redmond Police Department is searching for video footage from an unprovoked attack on officers at Redmond Lights the evening if Dec, 1 and hope the public may be able to help.

According to a press release on the Redmond Police Blotter blog, the incident began just before 5 p.m. when a belligerent man rushed an officer who was directing traffic along the event route in the 7800 block of Leary Way. The suspect, a 40-year-old Bellevue man, was yelling profanities and telling the officer to shoot him.

The suspect then abruptly reached into his jacket, as if for a weapon, and the officer quickly grabbed both the suspect’s arms and swept him to the ground, according to the release. Another officer ran to assist in restraining the hostile suspect who was threatening to stab the officers and demanding to be killed. During the struggle the suspect punched and fought both officers and continued to yell threats but did not have a weapon. Two more officers arrived on scene and the suspect was eventually restrained and handcuffed.

According to the post, one of the officers sustained bruised ribs and a contusion to the knee. She was transported to the hospital and released a few hours later. The suspect was not seriously injured.

“The suspect was clearly disturbed and his reckless behavior was a threat to himself, our officers and many surrounding citizens,” Redmond police Lt. Martin Fuller said in the release. “Thankfully, our officers are well-trained and reacted quickly to mitigate harm to everyone involved.”

As the incident occurred in the middle of the busy event walking route, police officials are hoping a witness may have captured the situation on video and be willing to share it with investigators, the release states.
