It wasn’t the result the Redmond Mustangs boys soccer team envisioned in the Class 3A state soccer semifinals.

The Roosevelt Roughriders cruised to a 6-0 victory against Redmond on May 25 at Sparks Stadium in downtown Puyallup. Roosevelt seniors Jimmy Reid Torres and Avery Jacobson each scored two goals apiece in the win. Roosevelt junior Rowan Calvert and senior Alex Low added a goal apiece as well.

“Our team was just ready. We have been playing really well all year. The only game we lost this year was in PK’s (penalty kicks) in the regular season. Our guys are just hungry and they’re ready,” Roosevelt head coach Gary Hunter said. “We have been here before and have the experience. We know what it takes. It was just a great team effort.”

Redmond forwards Angel Hernandez and Michael Snook created opportunities to score throughout the duration of the game but couldn’t find the back of the net against the Roughriders.

“We just didn’t finish our chances. If we finish those chances, it’s a different game,” Redmond head coach Lacy Wilkinson said after the loss to Roosevelt. “The strength of our team all year has been our resiliency and our ability to fight back.”

The Mustangs redeemed themselves courtesy of a 4-3 win against Lakeside in the Class 3A third-/fourth-place game on May 26.

Notching third is the best finish in school history.
