Arthur (Art) Wilbur Hammond, 98, longtime resident of Redmond, WA, died March 1, 2018 after a long illness. He was born January 8, 1920 in Macdoel, CA, the youngest son, and one of ten siblings, of Jirah (Whelan) Hammond and Ethel Maud (Kemp) Hammond.
He volunteered for the US Navy at age 17, serving during World War II as part of a gunnery unit on merchant ships in Alaska and Australia.
In 1943 Art married Nada Shepardson. They lived in Seattle where they raised their two sons, Clayton and Gary, and later in Redmond until her death in 1981.
Art completed one year at UW, and then worked for Northwestern Glass Co. from which he retired after many years.
He met Peggy Banker who became his companion of 30 years until her 2017 death at the age of 101.
Art was an avid golfer and frequently volunteered as a marshal for the Bob Hope Golf Classic in southern California. He was a member of the VFW Post 2995 and American Legion Post 161.
He spent his days reading and talking about politics, religion, his life experiences and family history to anyone who would listen.
He is survived by two sisters, Alice McDonald and Ruth Lund of Klamath Falls, OR; his son, Gary (Pat) Hammond, seven grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 14 great great-grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Nada; his longtime companion Peggy Banker; his son Clayton and daughter-in-law Gloria; his great grandson Mark; his parents; and seven siblings.
A memorial service will be held in Macdoel, CA at the Lakeview Cemetery on August 3, 2018, with burial in the family plot.
