The Bear Creek School junior Madelyn Magee won her second consecutive high jump title at the Class 2B state track and field meet last weekend at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

Magee’s winning jump of 5 feet, eight inches on her final attempt was the state’s highest leap of the weekend, regardless of classification. Magee placed second at the state meet as a freshman before winning her first state title last spring with a mark of 5-5.

Magge’s gold-medal win helped the Grizzlies girls’ team finish 12th in the team standings with 26.5 points.

Magee’s teammate junior Morgan Rial took home two individual medals and ran a leg on the Grizzlies’ 400-meter relay team. Rial won the bronze medal in the 400 with a time of 1 minute, .81 seconds and placed seventh in the 200 in 27.68.

Rial, along with fellow juniors Elizabeth Fernandez, Halle Coleman and Danielle Isbell brought home a third-place finish in the 400 relay. The same four girls won a bronze medal in the 800 relay at last spring’s state meet.

Senior Josh Firminger led the way for the Bear Creek boys contingent, which garnered an 18th-place finish in the team standings. Firminger placed second in the 400 with a time of 51.15 and finished eighth in the 200 in 23.94.

Firminger also ran a leg on the fifth-place 400 relay team. The team — comprised of Firminger, Nigel Saw, Mark Phillips and Lucas Fernandez — broke the school record with a time of 45.41 during the preliminary race before taking fifth in the finals.
