Redmond’s football season ended on Tuesday night after Lake Washington defeated the Mustangs, 21-3, in a 3A KingCo mini-playoff football game at Skyline High. Earlier in the night, Mercer Island beat LW, 7-3, to advance to districts.

Both games consisted of two 12-minute quarters and took place since the three teams were tied with 3-2 league records at the end of the regular season. A coin flip last Friday night determined the order in which the teams would play in the tiebreaker.

According to Redmond head coach Jason Rimkus, the young, gritty and banged up Mustangs made some big stops and moved the ball, but missed their chances to punch the ball into the end zone.

Redmond led, 3-0, early on a Jacen Stein 32-yard field goal, and LW took over from there.

“So proud of this group — a bunch of overachieving, team-first guys that played every down with toughness and determination,” Rimkus said. “I’m honored to have coached this senior class. Small in numbers but large in heart.”

MI is the No. 2 KingCo seed to districts and LW is the No. 3 seed. Bellevue is the No. 1 seed with a 5-0 league record.

Redmond defeated Interlake, 23-13, in KingCo action on Oct. 27 to earn a spot in the tiebreaker.

Mustang quarterback Teryn Berry connected with Bradley Cagle for an 11-yard touchdown, Matthew Janetzki scored on a 7-yard run, Jeremy Hernandez tallied on a 15-yard run and Redmond notched a safety. Stein had three PATs.
