Redmond defeats Lake Washington, 24-16 | Prep Football

Redmond bolted out to a commanding lead after three quarters and held on for a 24-16 victory over previously undefeated Lake Washington in 3A KingCo football action on Friday night.

At Redmond High in the second quarter, Carson Bruener turned a fake punt into a 30-yard touchdown pass to Matt Janetzki, Mustang quarterback Teryn Berry fired a 21-yard touchdown pass to Bradley Cagle, and the signal caller scored on a 21-yard run. Jacen Stein kicked a 21-yard field goal in the third quarter to put Redmond up 24-0.

LW came roaring back in the fourth quarter with a pair of Michael Buchanan touchdown passes, one to Domonic Roussell for 60 yards and the other to Ryan Clifford for 78 yards. Roussell and Jensen Leewens added 2-point runs to make the score, 24-16.

Berry was 14-for-24 passing for 255 yards and Buchanan was 11-for-28 for 254 yards.

Redmond’s Jeremy Hernandez ran the ball nine times for 58 yards and Clifford had 17 carries for 51 yards.

On the receiving front, Redmond’s Cagle had eight snags for 193 yards, Roussell had three catches for 120 yards and Clifford had four receptions for 89 yards.

Overall, Redmond had 370 yards of offense and LW garnered 307 yards.

Defensively, LW’s Brayden Boyes had six tackles and one assist and Redmond’s Bruener had four tackles. LW’s Christopher Chaplin recovered two fumbles and Redmond got one interception each from Janetzki, Nathan Anderson and Emmanuel Tamayo.

“Like most games, there are ebbs and flows, but up 24-0 going into the fourth was purely based on grit and execution,” said Redmond head coach Jason Rimkus, adding that the Mustangs played a solid three and a half quarters.

He noted that Redmond’s offense, defense and special teams all contributed to the victory.

“LW was a big, fast and well-coached team. My hat’s off to our boys for beating a strong opponent,” Rimkus said. “We’re a very young team, so focus and humility are keys to keep momentum going. Not getting big heads and not taking for granted the hard work it took for our team to be successful.”

Redmond is 1-0 in league and 2-3 overall and LW is 0-1 in league and 4-1 overall.

Last year, Redmond beat LW, 28-27, in double overtime.

Redmond will next travel to Mercer Island for a 7 p.m. game this Friday.
