Redmond Mayor John Marchione signed an initiative from the Mayors’ Naitonal Climate Action Agenda, dedicating the city to meeting commitments set in the Paris Climate Agreement.
The initiative is a nationwide one calling on all signing U.S. mayors to uphold their commitments to the goals outlined in the Paris Agreement. These include taking measures to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, creating a clean energy economy and standing for environmental justice, a press release from the city said.
The purpose is to combine the effects of mayors to fight against climate change.
“The city will continue its efforts to address climate change,” Marchione said in the release.
Following President Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement earlier this month, governors and mayors from across the country have vowed to fight against climate change without the support of the federal government.
According to The Guardian, Trump’s attempts to renegotiate the Paris Agreement were denied by the European Union, who will instead work with states and bypass the federal government.
